This series focuses on the many aspects of our anti-racist daily life - family, work, community, health, friendships, worship - how we take care of each other. We’re gathering experts in a variety of fields, all with extensive knowledge about how to be actively anti-racist.
"The beauty of anti-racism is that you don't have to pretend to be free of racism to be an anti-racist. Anti-racism is the commitment to fight racism wherever you find it, including in yourself. And it's the only way forward."

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION-ALITY": A CONVERSATION ON SOCIAL IDENTITY AND HOW IT RELATES TO BIAS
Social identity refers to the ways that individuals' self-concepts are based on their group membership in social groups. Society Identity Theory proposed that the groups in which people belong to are, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, can be an important source of pride and self-esteem. Furthermore, beyond sources of pride and self-esteem, the groups we belong to can also influence the way in which we view and interact with the world. It is these processes that can lead to bias and prejudice.
Dr Howard will talk about
What is Your Position-ality: A Conversation on Social Identity and How it Relates to Bias
This session will be recorded and available for future viewings to all who purchased tickets for the event.
Dr. Simon Howard is the Director of the Psychology of Racism, Identity, Diversity, and Equity (PRIDE) lab and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Miami. He is a first-generation college graduate who completed his undergraduate degree at San Jose State University. Dr. Howard went on to earn his Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Tufts University. Using experimental methods drawn from cognitive, perceptual, and social investigations his research aims to understand and address contemporary racism. To this end he has conducted research on the interpersonal and contextual influences on racially biased perception, judgment, behavior, and mental health of both historically advantaged (e.g., White people) and disadvantaged group members (e.g., Black people). His recent work can be organized in three broad themes: 1) The role of religion in maintaining racial hierarchy; 2) the influence of race on perception, judgment, and behavior, and 3) The consequences of exposure to vicarious racism for racially stigmatized groups.
Dr. Howard is the Director of the University of Miami PRIDE Lab (The Psychology of Racism, Identity, Diversity, and Equity). The Lab investigates issues related to stereotyping and prejudice. Using experimental methods drawn from cognitive, perceptual, and social investigations, much of the work in our lab explores the ways race influences—often negatively—our social perception, judgment, interactions, and mental well-being in a variety of domains (e.g., law, religion, performance). Recently, projects in our lab have explored/are exploring the relationship between racial and gendered conceptualizations of Jesus/God and ideologies that maintain racial and gender hierarchies, the influence of race on perceptions of individuals with obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders (e.g., trichotillomania) and the effects of social identity threat (i.e., the concern about being devalued based on one’s group identity in a given context) on cognitive performance and judgments.

EMOTIONAL INTEGRATION AS A MEASURE OF ALLYSHIP: GENERATIONAL HEART-CLEANSING
In his time providing workshops, talks, and working with ally-hopefuls, Dr. Sawyer has identified two primary issues in addressing one’s privilege, which, are also issues he has seen in his time as a psychologist providing therapeutic treatment for those seeking emotional resolution: 1. Lack of individual emotional awareness/integration, and 2. Lack of individual daily mental health hygiene practice. In this workshop, Dr. Sawyer will unpack and address these 2 issues, and discuss why our Western fixation on language has become a barrier to true emotional change.

THE SEVEN LAYERS OF LISTENING: HOW TO HEAR WITH YOUR HEART
Have you ever considered that your most prominent defense mechanisms could exist in your quality of listening? How we listen communicates a lot about our true receptivity. As of the past ten years, any self-respecting progressive person has aimed to listen to understand, sure that this would be the most respectful way to resolve conflict and bring about social change. But often times listening to understand only leads to more confusion, and more division. Why is that? In this interactive talk, Antesa breaks down the seven layers of listening, including what exists beyond listening to understand and how you can activate your heart’s hearing capacity in order to ignite true sustained social and interpersonal change.
